Lettuce 'All Year Round' is an easy, reliable salad lettuce with soft, tender leaves and a mild, sweet flavour. You get 12 young plants, arriving in two 6-cell trays with one plant to each cell, ready to plant out and save you sowing from seed.

It forms a compact, upright, loose-leaf rosette, so it suits containers, grow bags, raised beds and open ground alike. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is not hardy and is mainly a spring to autumn crop, so plant out in May and June and expect to pick from July to October. Some winter lettuces will take a light frost under a cloche, but do not rely on this one to crop through a British winter.

Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained, fertile soil or compost. A little shade in high summer helps, because lettuce runs to seed and turns bitter in hot, dry weather. Water regularly so the soil never dries out, and make small repeat plantings rather than one big one for a steady supply.

Harvest the outer leaves regularly to encourage fresh new growth. A balanced liquid feed every two weeks keeps the leaves lush, and good drainage in pots and containers helps avoid root rot.
