Cabbage 'Greyhound' (Brassica oleracea) – Pointed Summer Cabbage (12 Plants in 2 x 6-Cell Trays)
Greyhound cabbage is a classic early summer cabbage, grown for its neat pointed heads, crisp sweet flavour and compact habit. It suits smaller plots, raised beds and kitchen gardens, and the heads can be cut young or left to mature fully.
Greyhound (Brassica oleracea) forms a tidy, upright plant with smooth, pale to mid-green outer leaves around a tightly packed, pointed heart. It matures faster than round-headed cabbages, and the heads are excellent raw, steamed, stir-fried or braised. It is a good choice for first-time and experienced growers alike.
You receive 12 young plants, growing one to a cell in two 6-cell trays. They are ready to plant out into firm, fertile, moist but well drained soil in sun, or into a large container. Space them about 30-35cm apart in rows 30-45cm apart, and firm the soil around each plant to prevent wind rock.
Water regularly in dry spells, because steady moisture helps the heads form, and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser through the growing season. Net the plants against pigeons and cabbage white butterflies, use a collar against cabbage root fly, and check regularly for slugs and caterpillars. Cut the heads while they feel firm and solid, as they can split if left too long. Avoid planting in ground where other brassicas have recently grown, to reduce the risk of club root.
