Beetroot 'Boltardy' is one of the most reliable and popular beetroot varieties for UK growers, with smooth, round, deep red roots and excellent resistance to bolting. Whether you are new to growing your own vegetables or a seasoned allotment gardener, young plants give you a head start on a homegrown harvest with no seed sowing required.

You receive 12 young beetroot plants, growing in 2 plastic 6-cell trays with one plant to each cell. They are ready to plant out into a raised bed, container, kitchen garden or allotment plot. Boltardy is a good choice for succession planting, and it suits small spaces and beginner vegetable gardeners.

Beetroot is not reliably hardy, so plant out in May and June and lift the roots before a hard frost. Give it a sunny spot in fertile, free-draining soil, and avoid freshly manured ground. Space plants 10cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Water regularly and consistently to encourage steady root development and to help avoid bolting. A balanced general fertiliser during the growing season will keep plants growing well.

Harvest when the roots reach about the size of a golf ball for the best flavour and texture. The young leaves with their red-veined stems are edible too. Beetroot also grows well in containers, so a patio is fine if you have no bed to spare.
