Strawberry 'Royal Sovereign' (Fragaria x ananassa) – Heritage Summer Fruiting Variety (12 x 9cm Pots)
Royal Sovereign is one of the most celebrated and traditional British strawberry varieties, beloved by gardeners for generations. Known for its exceptional flavour and classic strawberry fragrance, it produces large, conical, bright red fruits with a sweet, rich taste that modern varieties rarely match.
You receive 12 strawberry plants, each in its own 9cm pot, as established plants ready to go straight into the ground, a raised bed or a container. This heritage variety suits anyone who wants to grow their own strawberries at home, whether on an allotment, in a vegetable bed or in pots on a patio or balcony. The fruit is excellent eaten fresh, made into jam or used in baking.
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot for the best crop, spacing plants 30-40cm apart so air can circulate. Royal Sovereign is a summer fruiting variety, cropping in June and July. It is fully hardy, though plants in pots appreciate a little protection round the roots in a hard winter. The white flowers in late spring and early summer attract bees, and bee visits improve fruit shape.
Water regularly, especially in dry spells and while fruit is forming, and avoid waterlogging. Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser through the growing season, and lay straw or a strawberry mat round the plants to keep fruit clean and deter slugs. Remove runners as they appear to keep plants productive, or pot them on to make new plants. Mulch round the plants in autumn. It may not out-yield modern varieties, but many gardeners consider it the finest-tasting strawberry to grow at home.
