Primroses bring clean white flowers with a bright central eye from late winter into spring, on compact plants that suit pots, baskets and borders. These Bonneli white primroses (Primula) are hardy, low maintenance and long flowering.

Each plant forms a neat, low rosette of crinkled, mid-green leaves with upright flower stems. The white blooms pair well with early spring bulbs such as daffodils and tulips, or with other coloured primroses for a mixed spring scheme. They suit formal bedding and relaxed cottage garden planting equally well.

You get 12 plants, growing in 2 trays of 6 cells, one plant to a cell. They are ready to plant out into borders, patio containers, window boxes and hanging baskets. Plant them at the same depth as they are growing, about 15-20cm apart, in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Full sun is fine where the soil stays moist, and partial shade in a cool, sheltered spot suits them well.

Water regularly without letting the crown sit in water, feed with a balanced liquid feed every two weeks while growing, and deadhead spent blooms to keep the flowers coming. Primroses are true perennials, so they will return year after year if planted in the ground after flowering. Primulas can cause stomach upset and skin irritation, so wash your hands after handling.
