The Ficus elastica 'Robusta', better known as the Rubber Plant, is a bold evergreen houseplant grown for its large, glossy, deep green paddle shaped leaves.

It grows as a single upright stem with broad, spreading foliage, giving a sculptural, tropical presence to a room. It adapts well to a range of indoor light levels, which is part of why it remains one of the most popular houseplants for UK homes.

This Rubber Plant arrives as an established young plant in a nursery pot, ready for a bright living room, office or hallway corner, out of direct midday sun. It prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate a dimmer spot, and a stable indoor temperature away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes.

Let the top inch or so of compost dry out between waterings, as yellowing or drooping leaves usually mean it has been overwatered. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser every four weeks during the growing season, and wipe the large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep them working well. It dislikes being moved or draughted, which can cause leaf drop, so once it is settled in a spot it is best left there.

The Rubber Plant is toxic to cats and dogs, and the milky sap can irritate skin, so hands should be washed after handling.
