Runner Bean 'Streamline' (Phaseolus coccineus) – Climbing Scarlet-Flowered Vegetable (12 Plants in 2 x 6-Cell Trays)
Runner bean 'Streamline' is a classic allotment favourite, grown for long, straight, flat pods and bright scarlet flowers that bees love. Ready to grow on, this variety (Phaseolus coccineus) suits a vegetable patch, a raised bed or a large container.
You get 12 plants, growing in 2 plastic 6-cell trays, one plant to a cell. Streamline is a reliable, well-established variety with a long cropping season. Pods are tender and stringless when picked young, around 20cm long, and the more you pick, the more the plant produces.
Runner beans are tender and are killed by frost, so keep the plants under cover and harden them off before planting out once the last frost has passed, usually late May to early June in the UK. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with moist, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. These are climbers and need a sturdy support such as a wigwam of canes, an A frame or netting at least two metres tall.
Water the base of the plants regularly, especially once they are in flower, as dry roots are the usual reason flowers drop without setting pods. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser once flowering, and pick pods often to keep the plants cropping. Raw pods and beans are harmful if eaten by people or dogs, so always cook them before eating.
