Runner bean 'Red Rum' is a reliable, heavy cropping climber that gives long, tender, deep green pods through summer and into early autumn, on plants pretty enough to earn a place on an arch or wigwam. It is a good choice for first-time and experienced growers alike.

You receive 12 young plants in 2 plastic 6-cell trays, one plant to a cell, ready to grow on and plant out in a garden, raised bed or large container. Runner beans are killed by frost, so plant them out only once the last frost has passed, typically from late May onwards in the UK.

Runner beans must have a tall support, so give them a wigwam or A frame of canes, or netting, at least two metres high. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water at the base, and water heavily once the flowers appear, because dry roots or a hot dry spell make the flowers drop without setting pods. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser once flowering begins, and pick pods young and often to keep the plants cropping.

The red flowers are a good source of nectar for bees and other pollinators. Raw pods and beans are harmful if eaten, so cook them thoroughly before eating.
