Cabbage 'Cordesa' (Brassica oleracea) – Savoy Vegetable Plants (12 Plants in 2 x 6-Cell Trays)
Cabbage 'Cordesa' is a savoy cabbage with deeply crinkled, dark green leaves and a sweet, tender flavour, and it is a rewarding choice for a first vegetable patch or a seasoned kitchen garden. This is the savoy form of Brassica oleracea, and these young plants give you a head start on the growing season.
You receive 12 plants, growing in 2 trays of 6 cells, one plant to a cell. They are ready for planting out into a prepared bed, raised bed or allotment.
Cordesa forms firm, tightly packed heads of beautifully textured, blistered leaves, and the flavour is at its sweetest after the first autumn frosts. Savoy cabbages stand through hard frost, so the heads can be left to ripen into early winter.
Choose a sunny spot with fertile, firm soil that is moist but well drained. Harden the young plants off gradually if they have been kept under cover, then plant them about 45-50cm apart and firm the soil well around each one so the heads stay stable as they swell. Water regularly in dry spells, avoiding waterlogging, and feed with a balanced general-purpose fertiliser at planting, followed by a nitrogen-rich feed to support leafy growth.
Protect the crop with fine mesh netting against cabbage white butterflies and pigeons, and use a collar at the base of each plant against cabbage root fly. Slugs can be a problem, so keep the area weed-free. Avoid planting in ground where other brassicas have recently grown, because of club root.
