Strawberry 'Pegasus' (Fragaria x ananassa) – Mid-Season Fruiting Plant (12 x 9cm Pots)
Pegasus strawberry plants bring reliable, flavour-packed summer fruit to a sunny bed, raised bed or container. This mid-season garden strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) crops in June and July, producing large, firm, glossy, deep-red berries that are sweet and juicy.
You receive 12 plants, each in its own 9cm pot, established and ready to plant. Pegasus is a highly regarded variety and a good choice for first-time fruit growers as well as experienced ones, with good resistance to verticillium wilt and crown rot.
Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost, setting each crown level with the soil surface. Space plants 30-45cm apart in rows about 75cm apart. Strawberries also grow happily in pots, grow bags and hanging baskets, so they suit a patio as well as a plot. They are self fertile, though visiting bees improve fruit shape.
Water regularly, especially while flowering and fruiting, and avoid wetting the crown. Feed with a high-potash liquid feed fortnightly once flowers appear. Mulch with straw or a strawberry mat to keep fruit clean and suppress weeds, and remove runners unless you want new plants. Plants tire after three or four years and are best replaced from runners.
