Strawberry 'Albion' (Fragaria x ananassa) – Everbearing Fruiting Perennial (12 x 9cm Pots)
Strawberry 'Albion' is a well-loved everbearing strawberry that gives large, firm, glossy red fruits with excellent flavour, cropping in flushes from early summer right through to the first frosts of autumn.
Albion is a low, mounding, compact perennial with bright mid-green, serrated leaves and white flowers with yellow centres. It is a good choice for kitchen gardens, raised beds, patio containers and hanging baskets. The fruit is delicious fresh, and also suits freezing, preserving and baking. It is self-fertile, so it will crop without a partner, though visiting bees improve fruit shape.
This pack holds 12 strawberry plants, each in its own 9cm pot, ready to plant in the ground, a raised bed or a container. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly in dry spells and while the fruit is forming, and feed with a balanced or dedicated strawberry fertiliser once established. Mulch around the plants to hold moisture, suppress weeds and keep the fruit clean, and remove runners as they appear if you want the plant to put its energy into fruit. Plants in pots and baskets appreciate a little protection round the roots in a hard winter, and cropping tends to tail off after three or four years, when they are replaced from runners.
