Strawberry 'Tristrann' (Fragaria x ananassa) – Everbearing Fruit Plant (12 x 10.5cm Pots)
Tristrann strawberry plants bring a reliable, flavoursome crop to a garden or patio. Tristrann is an everbearing (perpetual) strawberry, so it gives a steady succession of sweet, medium to large, bright red berries from early summer right through to the first frosts.
You receive 12 plants, each growing in its own 10.5cm pot, ready to plant straight away. They suit garden beds, raised beds, hanging baskets, containers and patio pots, and the botanical name is Fragaria x ananassa 'Tristrann'. The low, spreading plants have mid-green, trifoliate leaves with serrated edges and send out short runners.
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot for the best fruit set and flavour. Enrich the soil with well-rotted compost or a balanced granular fertiliser before planting, and water regularly, especially while the fruit is forming, without letting the soil become waterlogged. Keep moisture away from the crown to prevent rot. Tristrann is fully hardy across Britain, though plants in pots and baskets appreciate a little protection round the roots in a hard winter. Bees visit the flowers, and that helps the fruit to set well.
Apply a high-potassium liquid feed once flowering begins, and mulch with straw to keep the fruit clean and hold in moisture. Remove runners as they appear to put the plant's energy into fruit, or pot them on to make new plants. Strawberry plants tire after three or four years, so divide or replace them then to keep them vigorous. As these are living plants, slight variation in size and appearance between individuals is natural.
