Primrose 'Bonneli Blue' brings vivid, jewel-toned blue flowers to the garden from late winter into spring, on a compact, cheerful plant that is ideal for early-season colour.

You get 12 plants, supplied growing in 2 plastic 6-cell trays, one plant to a cell, each with a well-established root-ball. The crinkled, mid-green leaves form a neat low rosette, and the flowers keep coming as the weather warms. They suit borders, patio containers and balcony displays, and look right at home in cottage garden planting and spring bedding schemes.

This primrose (Primula vulgaris) is fully hardy and copes with cold early spring weather. Plant it in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained, fertile soil, and keep it evenly watered in dry spells without letting it sit in standing water. In warmer areas, partial shade will extend the flowering period. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser while it is growing. Bees and other pollinators visit the flowers, and although it is usually bought as one season of spring colour, it is a true perennial that will return year after year if planted out.

Primulas can cause stomach upset and skin irritation, so wash your hands after handling. As with all living plants, flower colour intensity may vary slightly with growing conditions and season.
